Chemical Protective Gloves – Safety for Hazardous Substances

Chemical protective gloves are used wherever hands need to be protected from hazardous chemical substances. They are part of category III personal protective equipment and are designed for activities with high, potentially irreversible risks. The test according to EN ISO 374-1:2016 confirms its suitability for protection against defined chemicals.

Depending on the material, wall thickness and design, many chemical protection gloves offer protection not only against chemical influences, but also against mechanical hazards such as abrasion or puncture. This makes them particularly suitable for working environments with combined chemical and mechanical risks.

Materials & Finishes

The choice of material has a direct impact on protection. The higher the material thickness, the greater the retention capacity against chemicals. Chemical protection gloves are available in different materials and material combinations, including:

  • Nitrile rubber – versatile, chemical-resistant and mechanically resilient
  • Latex – elastic, good tactile feeling (not suitable for latex allergy)
  • Neoprene – resistant to many acids and alkalis
  • Butyl & Viton – specialized for highly aggressive chemicals
  • Material combinations – tailored to complex requirements

The selection of the right material should always be based on the chemicals used, the working environment and the mechanical stress.

Standards & Marking

Chemical protective gloves are tested for their suitability for protection against chemicals in accordance with EN ISO 374-1:2016. The Erlenmeyer piston symbol identifies gloves that have been tested for their resistance to certain chemicals.

In order to choose the right glove, the chemicals used should always be taken into account. In addition, the GESTIS substance database (DGUV) can be used to assess resistance to specific chemicals in a well-founded manner.

Typical areas of application

  • Chemical Industry & Production – Handling of Hazardous Substances
  • Laboratory & Pharma – Safe Working with Reagents
  • Cleaning & Facility Management – Protection against aggressive cleaning agents
  • Industry & Maintenance – Protection for activities with combined chemical and mechanical risks, such as maintenance work with hazardous substances
